Disney Social Club Explains: Historical Release Dates and Information from Past D23 Expo and Destination D Events

We recently started receiving a lot of questions about when tickets for this year’s Destination D would go on sale and when the date for the 2019 D23 Expo would be announced. While we don’t have answers to either of those questions, we did want to share some fun information with you that may give you an idea as to how D23 announces these events and their ticket and schedule releases.
Below you will find the event dates and location for all of the D23 Expos held in the U.S. and Japan as well as information on previous Destination D events. We also provided information like when tickets went on sale and when the full schedule was released if we could find confirmed information on those details from quality sources/sites.

D23 Expo – United States
All US D23 Expo’s have been held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California

September 10–13, 2009

“On March 10, 2009, Disney Chairman and CEO Robert Iger introduced D23: The Official Disney Fan Club and the then-upcoming D23 Expo 2009 in grand style on ABC’s hit daytime talk show The View.”
That year’s annual meeting of shareholders was March 10, 2009.
2009 D23 Expo tickets went on sale on June 2, 2009
- Admission for D23 members will be $30 per person for a one-day ticket; $90 for a four-day pass (4th day free).
- Tickets were $37 for a one-day adult admission and $27 for children 3-12.
- 3-day passes are also available at $111 for adults and $81 for children.
- Members of D23: The Official Community for Disney Fans received a discount on up to four same-day admissions, as well as early entry to each day of the D23 EXPO for themselves and their guests.
The full schedule was released on August 25, 2009.
We could not find any confirmation that any ticket type sold out in 2009. We will update this information if we find proof that that occured.

August 19–21, 2011

The 2011 Expo dates were announced on March 10, 2010.
That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 8, 2010.
Tickets went on sale August 19, 2010.
In 2011 General 3 and 1 day tickets were available, as were Premiere Package and Sorcerer Packages.

For the 2011 Expo, pricing was announced on Aug 18, 2010 and tickets went on sale on August 19, 2010. That means pricing was announced 1 day before tickets went on sale.

August 9-11, 2013

The 2013 Expo dates were announced on Mar 9, 2012.
That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 13, 2012.
Tickets went on sale August 9, 2012.
For the 2013 Expo, pricing was announced on July 26, 2012 and tickets went on sale on August 9, 2012. That means pricing was announced 14 days before tickets went on sale.

On August 8, 2013 Saturday only tickets sold out.
A runDisney 2.3 mile fun was held on August 9. The event was announced on July 25, 2013 on the Disney Parks Blog. Members could RSVP by email and were updated on July 25 at 2PM PT if they had been selected to participate.

August 14–16, 2015

The 2015 Expo dates were announced on March 18 2014 at The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting.
Tickets went on sale August 14, 2014.
For the 2015 Expo, pricing was announced on August 6, 2014 and tickets went on sale on August 14, 2014. That means pricing was announced 8 days before tickets went on sale.

  - 3 Day Ticket early bird $169, after July 1, 2015 $188
  - 1 Day Ticket early bird $58, after July 1, 2015 $74
- Non Member Pricing
  - 3 Day Ticket $196, after July 1, 2015 $216

- Sorcerer Package tickets are available exclusively to both Gold and Silver D23 Members at $2,000 per ticket. Members have the option to purchase up to two Sorcerer tickets.
The full Expo schedule was released on July 21, 2015.
StorePass was released at the 2015 D23 Expo. StagePass also returned.
2015 D23 Expo tickets started mailing in mid-July 2015. Tickets are mailed in waves.

July 14-16, 2017

The 2017 Expo dates were announced on March 28, 2016.
That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 3, 2016
Tickets went on sale July 14, 2016.
For the 2017 Expo, pricing was announced on July 6, 2016 and tickets went on sale July 14, 2016. That means pricing was announced 8 days before tickets went on sale.

2019 D23 Expo – August 23–25, 2019

The 2019 Expo dates were announced on March 26, 2018.
That year’s annual shareholders meeting was March 8, 2018.
Tickets will go on sale on August 23, 2018.
For the 2019 Expo, pricing was announced on August 17, 2018 and tickets went on sale August 23, 2018. That means pricing was announced six days before tickets went on sale.

  - 3 Day Ticket early bird $177, after November 20, 2018 $219
  - 1 Day Ticket early bird $67, after November 20, 2018 $79
- Non D23 Gold Member Pricing – No Early Bird rates offered

- A limited number of VIP Sorcerer Packages for D23 Expo 2019 will be available exclusively to both D23 Gold and Gold Family Members at $2,500 per ticket.
In 2019 TalentPass and Advance Online Reservations was introduced. This system was used for TalentPass, StorePass and StagePass.
2019 D23 Expo Badges were RFID enabled.
On April 29, 2019 3-day tickets sold out.
On May 31, 2019 Saturday only tickets sold out.
On August 9, 2019 Friday only tickets sold out.
On August 14, 2019 Sunday only tickets sold out.

2021 D23 Expo

Due to Covid-19 the D23 Expo was not held in 2021. On September 28, 2020 D23 announced that the next Expo would be held September 9-11, 2022

2022 D23 Expo – September 9-11, 2022

The 2022 Expo dates were announced on Twitter on September 28, 2020
That year’s annual shareholders meeting was held on March 9, 2021
On September 9, 2021 D23 announced that 2022 Expo tickets would go on sale on January 20, 2022 instead of the usual 12 months in advance policy.
For the 2022 Expo, pricing was announced on January 13, 2022.
That means pricing was announced 7 days before tickets went on sale.
On January 13 it was announced there would not be a Sorcerer Level in 2022, instead there will be general admission and Hall D23 Preferred Seating.
It was announced that all attendees must be either a Free or Gold D23 member to purchase tickets.
- D23 Gold/ Gold Duo Member Pricing:
  - 3 Day Ticket $229 per adult, $209 children ages 3-9
  - 1 Day Ticket $89 per adult, $79 for children ages 3-9
- D23 General Member Pricing
  - 3 Day Ticket $279 per adult, $209 children ages 3-9
  - 1 Day Ticket $99 per adult, $79 for children ages 3-9
- Non D23 Gold Member Pricing
  - N/A

A D23 Gold Visa Member Presale was held on 1/19/22. A limited number of 3-day and single day tickets were sold during this pre-sale. The 3-day tickets sold out in roughly 20 minutes, the single day tickets did not sell out during the Visa Pre-sale.

- A limited number of Hall D23 Preferred Seating for D23 Expo 2022 was available exclusively to both D23 Gold and Gold Duo Members for $899.

On January 20, 2022, at 12 p.m. PST Gold member, General Member and Hall D23 Preferred Seating went on sale to all guests.

General Member 3-day tickets were sold out pm January 20, 2022 by 3pm EST.
D23 released additional Saturday only Gold Member tickets and General Member 3-day tickets on January 24, 2022, they sold out the day they were released .
On June 13, 2022 all Gold and General Member Friday only tickets sold out.
On January 27, 2022 all Gold and General Member Saturday only tickets sold out.
On July 19, 2022 D23 put out a D23 Member App alert that Sunday tickets were low.
On July 23, 2022 D23 announced that the Expo was completely sold out.

Hall D23 Preferred Seating

- - D23 Gold Members may purchase up to two (2) 3-Day Tickets with Hall D23 Preferred Seating. These tickets are very limited and subject to availability.
  - 3-Day Ticket with Hall D23 Preferred Seating only includes guaranteed seating in a preferred section in Hall D23 and does not include any additional benefits or preferred seating in other venues.
  - Hall D23 Preferred Seating section subject to change and may vary between presentations.
  - Hall D23 Preferred Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  - Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to each presentation time. If you do not arrive at the Hall D23 Preferred Seating Queue at least 30 minutes prior to the start of a presentation, your seat may be forfeited for that presentation.
    - D23 Expo 3-Day Tickets with Hall D23 Preferred Seating tickets sold out in roughly 15 minutes of going on sale on January 20, 2022

The D23 Exclusive Member Night: Oogie Boogie Bash was announced on June 13, 2022 when the rest of Disneyland’s special ticket halloween party dates were announced. The Party was held on September 10, 2022

On June 28 (no earlier than 9 a.m. PT), a limited amount of Oogie Boogie Bash tickets went on pre-sale to members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club for the exclusive one-night D23 special event. This was the same day that tickets for the other OBB dates went on pre-sale to Magic Key/Annual Passholders. Tickets for the D23 Member exclusive night were $179 per person
- The number of tickets available are limited and valid only for the specific event date and hours. Limit eight tickets per person, per event date. Tickets not required for guests ages 2 and under. Ticket purchases cannot be made in person and are only available online or via the mobile app while supplies last. Parking is not included in the ticket price. Tickets are non-refundable and may not be resold or transferred for a commercial purpose.
On June 30, 2022 at 11:00PM ET, D23 Exclusive Member Night: Oogie Boogie Bash tickets were showing as sold out.
In 2022 a randomly selected StagePass, Hall D23 StagePass and TalentPass RSP was introduced.
In 2022 there were no Gold Member standby queues for panels or shopping.
2022 D23 Expo Badges were RFID enabled.
In 2022 all Disney run stores used a Virtual Queue system for entry. Virtual Queues opened at 6am and 1pm the day of and used the D23 Expo App and Disneyland Park app.
It was confirmed at the 2024 CES event by Disney’s Chief Brand Officer Asad Ayaz that the 2022 Expo “drew almost 80,00 and generated 280 billion digital and social media impressions.”

2024 D23 Expo/D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event – August 9-11, 2024

The 2024 Expo dates were announced on at Destination D23 on September 9, 2023. During this announcement Mr. Vargo shared that there would also be a D23 Day at Angel Stadium as a part of the event, a “D23 Member Take over” of Disneyland on August 8, and that several larger panels would be moved to nighttime hours and held at the Honda Civic Center.
That year’s annual shareholders meeting was held on April 3, 2024
With no prior notice given, D23 announced the date of the “D23 Day at Angel Stadium” event would be August 04, 2024 and that tickets were live for purchase at time of annoucement. Full details can be found on our Facebook post.
On the evening of January 10, 2024, it was announced by Disney’s Chief Brand Officer Asad Ayaz at CES that 2024 Expo tickets would go on sale on March 26, 2024. Ticket info and pricing was not released at this time.
At CES it was announced that D23 plans to reach fans who cannot attend the event in 2024, and to do this Disney is planning to stream portions of the convention on Disney+ for the first time ever.
Ayaz also announced that “The D23 experience will also expand globally, beginning in São Paulo, Brazil, this November.”
For the 2024 Expo, pricing was announced on _____ and tickets went on sale March 26, 2024. That means pricing was announced ___ days before tickets went on sale.

Destination D Event Information
Destination D events have gone from being a yearly event with a “floating” location to an every other year event that is held on even numbered years at Walt Disney World.

September 24-25, 2010

Was held at the Disneyland Hotel ballroom in Anaheim, California.
2010 Destination D dates were announced on March 10, 2010.
The theme was Disneyland ’55.

May 14-15, 2011

Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2011 Destination D dates were announced February 11, 2011.
May 12 and 13, guests may also register for D23’S Great Disney Scavenger Hunt, which will take hundreds of teams on a scavenger hunt through all four Disney parks, and is also open to the general public, in addition to D23 members. Registration for the Hunt is separate from Destination D.
Tickets went on sale February 24, 2011.
Destination D tickets are $175 per person, and $215 for ticket plus registration for one Hunt team (between 2 and 4 people)
The theme was Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th

August 11-12, 2012

Was held at the Disneyland Hotel ballroom in Anaheim, California.
2012 Destination D dates were announced November 28, 2011.
Tickets went on sale April 18, 2012
Regular admission to “Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animated Features” will cost $225 per person. Diamond level tickets, which will be available for $1,000 each

The theme was 75 Years of Disney Animated Features

November 22 – 23, 2014

Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2014 Destination D dates were announced January 21, 2014.
Tickets went on sale April 16, 2014 for Gold and Silver D23 members and to the general public on May 28, 2014.
Gold and Silver D23 members tickets were $190 each. Free level of D23 tickets were $250. Top of the World tickets were available for $1,000 each.
The full schedule was announced on or around September 17, 2014.
The theme was Destination D: Attraction Rewind.

November 19- 20, 2016

Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2016 Destination D dates were announced December 1, 2015.
Tickets went on sale April 21, 2016.
Tickets cost $190 each for those who are D23 Gold and Gold Family Members. D23 General Member tickets, were $250 per ticket. Wilderness Explorer VIP tickets for $1,100 each.
The full schedule was announced on October 19, 2016.
The theme was Destination D: Amazing Adventures.

November 16-18, 2018

Was held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2018 Destination D dates were announced on October 1, 2017.
Tickets went on sale on April 12th, 2018.
Gold and Gold family members tickets were priced at $215 per person. General Tickets officially sold out on May 23, 2018. Mouseketeer VIP Level Tickets were $1,300 per person.
The full schedule was announced on September 19, 2018
The theme will be Destination D: Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse.

November 20–22, 2020 original date/ November 16 – 20, 2020 virtual date

Was originally supposed to be held at the Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2020 Destination D dates and the theme were announced on November 26, 2019.
The theme was D23 Destination D: Fantastic Worlds
On June 26, 2020 D23 announced that the 2020 Destination D event would be postponed until 2021.
A vitrual version of Destination D was held on November 16 – 20, 2020 on D23.com. The Disney Parks Blog shared the schedule on November 13, 2020.

November 19 – 21, 2021

Held Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2021 Destination D dates was announced on June 24, 2021
Tickets went on sale on July 29, 2021
Gold and Gold family members tickets were priced at $249 for general seating and $399 for preferred seating. There is no VIP level option for the 2021 Destination D event. Tickets officially sold out on July 29, 2021.
On August 27, 2021 D23 Destination D attendees and other D23 Gold Members were invited to purchase tickets to a special showing of Cirque du Soleil Drawn to Life or one of the first performances on opening weekend, Friday, November 19 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
The Pin RSP email went out on September 24, 2021. The last day to submit was October 1, 2021 and October 15, 2021 was when attendees received their RSP results by email.
The full schedule was announced on October 14, 2021
The theme was “A Fan-Tastic Disney Celebration” and tied in with the Walt Disney World Resort 50th Anniversary.

September 8-10, 2023

Held Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom in Orlando, Florida.
2023 Destination D dates was announced on December 8, 2022
Ticket pricing and the sale date were announced on March 10, 2023.
Tickets went on sale on March 14, 2023.
General seats were $329 per ticket and Preferred seats were $549 per ticket. Tickets were only available to D23 Gold and Gold Duo members. There was a limit of 2 tickets per member. There is no VIP level option for the 2021 Destination D event.
Both ticket tiers sold out in 15 minutes
The theme was celebrating 100 years of Disney.

2025

D23 Expo Events outside of the United States

D23 Japan

D23 Expo Japan Dates
All D23 Expo Japan Expos have been held at the Tokyo Disney Resort. As of August 24, 2021 only three D23 Japan Expos were announced and held.

October 12–14, 2013

The 2013 Japan Expo dates were announced on February 25, 2013.
Ticket application started on or around March 28, 2013.
The full Expo schedule was released on March 28, 2013.

November 6–8, 2015

The 2015 Japan Expo dates were announced on March 16, 2015.
Ticket application started on or around May 6, 2015.
The full Expo schedule was released on May 7, 2015.

February 10–12, 2018

The 2017 Japan Expo dates were announced on March 21, 2017.
3 day Fantasia Pass E-ticket advance lottery ticket sales started on August 23, 2017
The full Expo schedule was released on July 19, 2017.

*The D23 Japan Expo uses a lottery and application system for tickets, events and merchandise.

D23 Brazil

November 2024

On the evening of January 10, 2024, it was announced by Disney’s Chief Brand Officer Asad Ayaz at CES that D23 would hold a D23 event in Brazil in November of 2024.
At the time of announcement Disney did not officially announce the exact dates or location of the event.
